I have a Case 580D backhoe with the 207 normally aspirated diesel engine with a Stanadyne Model DB2 injector pump. I have been having a problem losing power and refusing to run above idle RPM. After checking the manuals that I own and checking the archives, I found the return line connector with the ball check valve that mounts to the pump cover was fouled with debris. It looks like rust particles. I removed the cover on the injector pump and cleaned out all the debris inside. After cleaning the connector and check valve, the tractor runs fine for 1/2 hr to an hour. Then it becomes fouled again. My question is what do I look for as the cause of my problem. The fuel filters were changed in May, and I changed them again yesterday after finding the problem. I am using Baldwin filters. Do I need to drain and clean out the fuel tank or do I have something coming apart in the injector pump? It seems to me that the material must either be getting by the filters or be coming from the pump itself.

JDT, Roy is right , the particles are the parts of the governor weight retainer drive ring .It is recommended that you repair the pump , if ignored the two halves of the retainer will cut off the rivots that the drive ring snaps over and at that point you no longer have any governor control. the sky is then the limit for rpm . You need a 35 or 40 dollar kit , a new fitting ( for the one that is plugged as it is the housing
pressure regulator) a few tools and some intestinal
fortitude. Holler if you need help.

George and Roy,
Thanks for the replies, I pulled the pump off today and the problem was exactly what you both stated. I installed a new retainer ring and rebuild kit from the local injector service shop and I'll reinstall the pump tomorrow. Thanks again.

Joel

You might have a problem with your governor inside the injector pump.. Deere uses a stanadyne pump too , they usually crap out black particles.. Next time you open the timing window on the side of injector, see if the particles are rubbery feeling. you might have to remove pump for repairs..
