I-H TD-6 Diesel starting problem

I have a TD-6 tractor that I"m having trouble starting. When I bought a few weeks ago, it started just fine, but now when I try to start it it seems like it is getting too much gas and is fouling the plugs. I checked the choke linkage and it is opening. I also checked air cleaner and all looks to be fine. I have the feeling that something is wrong with the carb, and it"s feeding too much gas. I took the carb off, but haven"t taken it apart yet. Does anyone have any experience with this problem? My crawler manual doesn"t cover the carb. It refers to the diesel injection manual for carb info. Unfortunately I don"t have that manual. Any help will be appreciated.

Well, I took my carb apart yesterday, cleaned and checked it out. I can't seem to find anything wrong with it. The float valve looks ok, but I polished the needle anyway. Going to put it back on today and give it another try. Hard to figure this, it started and ran perfect a week ago.

As soon as it starts, start shutting off the gas under the starting tank. I have a UD-16 that sometimes gets too much gas and that's what I do.

Most of these gas start diesels don't seem to want too much choke. In warm weather I start mine with the choke open, if it does need choke it starts OK but then doesn't pick up too much speed. I just feather the choke for an RPM peak. Check ignition as well, mine has a mag and was bad about getting water in the bottom of the mag and not starting, I finally ran a bead of RTV around the inside of the coil cap and that fixed it, those coil cap gaskets are hard to get to seat right. E-mail back if that doesn't do it -- Brian

Have you confirmed that the float valve is shutting off fuel when the bowl fills up to proper level? You might fabricate a way to check the fuel level to confirm that its not overfilling. You could put a barbed fitting in the drain plug hole and use a short length of clear tubing to see what level the fuel reached.
Just a thought.
On my TD-18, I fought the carb without success and even had a service tech check it out without success. I was fortunate to buy a NOS carb and it amazed me how smoothly the engine ran after replacing the carb.

Where did you get your NOS carb. I have the same problem with my old 18. Thanks

I purchased it from Mueser Equipment in Springdale, Arkansas. I don't know if they are still in business or not. There may be other sources available.

I did go over the ignition and its fine, my problem is definitely too much fuel. If I clean the plugs it will start easily, but only one time. It runs rich and smokes black. I'm assuming something is wrong in the carb and it's feeding too much fuel.

Make sure the drain is open on the side of the carb (brass fitting that faces the flywheel side of the engine). There should be a drain tube connected there that runs down the side of the engine. There is a felt plug that goes in the fitting to allow extra gas to run out but keeps dirt from being sucked in. Many of the felt plugs become solid after time and won't allow extra fuel to drain out. If your float sticks or you have too much fuel, it will drain out the drain if it can, and avoid flooding the engine.
