I have a JD310A backhoe that I am fixing up little at a time. I just finished rebuilding the bucket, crowd, and boom cylinders. I was able to remove the rod guides (caps) by welding a couple of pieces of metal to the caps to make them about 1" wide where I grabbed the caps with a 36" pipe wrench. Then I heated the cylinder with a rosebud heating tip next to the cap. Within 10 to 20 seconds the cap would start unscrewing... The above process did not work on the swing cylinders. Does anyone have any advice on removing the cap from the swing cylinders. I assume the large casting on the cyl end is not allowing the cyl to expand...

TIA
John

There is no real easy way to remove rod guides from swing cylinders.. Ive worked for hours to get them free.. Did you remove the set screws?? of course you did.. I've used a piece of metal with a cut-out for the cylinder rod and welded it solid as best as possible [ shaped sort of like a heavy duty sling shot ] then slip a pipe onto the handle sticking out then heat and turn..

Thanks for the tip on the weld on part. I"ll give it a harder try when I get the 310 back to my shop. I was worried about putting too much heat on it just before I had a job to do then ruining the seal and not getting the rod guide off...
