I have a 1972 JD 350 and had a problem with lack of or very poor steering for years. I ran the machine the way it was by just doing a lot of backing up and turning one side just as one of your other responses suggested, but that was worrying me from all the noise it was making. I tore it down, cleaned all the parts of the rust and cleaned the surfaces of all the the plates and disks. To my astonishment, when I put it all back together, the thing will not even move. I"m stumped. Any suggestions. I am planning to try to replace all the steering parts inculding the pressure plate on one side this weekend to see if I can get it to move. Any suggestions including a source for parts?

As dsldr said, it sounds like the pressure plate isn't set correctly. We have that gauge and other parts you'll probably need...discs, plates, brake bands, all in stock. If you have any questions, send me an email.

Assuming everything was put back together correctly and adjusted properly, the problem probably lies with the discs. After cleaning the discs up you have probably lost too much material and no longer have the stack up height on the discs. New discs should take care of that. We have new discs and pressure plates available as well as other parts. Be sure to visit our website at www.pdmechanical.com. If you have any questions feel free to contact us directly.

Go to JD and get the tool that sets the finger heigth on the pressure plates. This will make all your adjustments fall into place easier, and taking this extra step it won't matter how thick your disks are (unless they are ridiculously thin) this will setup the pressure plate fingers to the correct height. I think the tool is less than $30 bucks.
