Was wondering if anybody knew of any forums covering excavators. Or a site that has buying tips. Been looking at a Cat 235 instead of buying a backhoe. Any help would be great!

Bob,

Do you know anything about Deere mini excavators? I am interested in the 35, about a 8000 LB machine. Thanks, Mark

Mark: I ran a 35C a couple of weeks ago--great little machine! The only thing I didn't like was that it didn't seem over-powered, or to be more precise, the relief valves kicked in during some pretty light digging. The Zero Tail Swing was also nice--we were putting drainage tile against the wall of a friend's garage, and it was very helpful to be able to plant the tracks against the wall and not have to worry about taking a chunk out of his new siding every time you swung the hoe.

I don't know anything about them Mark. But a good way to find out would be to rent a few different makes as you have work for them and see for your self. If you don't have a lot of work to do right now for one, do what a guy I know does. He put his name in at a rental place and if someone rents one and finds he can't operate it he gets a call to help. That way you can get payed while you find out.

They are a great machine Joe but beware of any bargan priced ones, they will be a money pit. The things you can see easily are the pin and bushing condition from where the boom connects to the upper structure down through the stick and the bucket. Cracks in the boom and stick, plated over cracks roughly done. Wear in the rotex bearing, wear in the swing drive causing lots of backlash and banging and shocking when you start and stop swinging. What you need to be an experienced operator for, is to better evaluate the condition of the pumps and engine. They can run with a worn engine, as long as it isn't knocking and missing but they can't run with worn out pumps. A brand new engine will just burn fuel and get nothing done if the pumps are in poor shape. Make sure the trackframes are held on by bolts not just welded to the lower frame. If there is no skid plate in the center look for cracks around the hole where the hoses go out to the drive motors. Hyd swivel leaking. Final drives over full of oil, brakes leaking. Final drives low on oil seals leaking at sprocket. Condition of undercarrage, idlers out to the end of the track frames from worn out pins and bushings. Missing rollers or ones with the centers worn out of them. Over all general appearance, watch out for a fresh coat of paint.

Thanks Bob-

I will be taking an old experinced operator with me when I look (he likes to look as much as I do). Just wanted to study up on it myself, so I dont bug him with dumb questions. Thanks for the info!

Any thing you know of to stay away from? We are gonna be looking at 215-235 cats in the $20k range.

Joe, they are all pretty good but the newer ones where beefed up in the areas that proved weak and broke. End of boom and stick to boom pin area of the stick. If you find a 225 with a 3304 engine and Rexroth pumps on it(both pumps in one housing) that would be my first choice then a 235 B or C. I prefer the 3300 engines over a 3204 in the 215 and 3208 in the 225 from a repair point of view because they have liners in them. Don't think these machines will sell in that range though.
Good Luck, Bob
