checking the condition of a backhoe

I plan to check on a Case 580D backhoe that is for sale. Asking price is $10,500 and it is owned by a used equipment dealer. I assume that it is a 2 wheel drive unit. This hoe will be used around the farm digging ditches, trenches, and possibly a small stocking pond. I have read from other discussions on this board that a Case, as a rule, is a good hoe especially for my needs. What should I be focusing on while I'm checking it out. I'm aware of such things as water in the crankcase and/or transmission or oil in the cooling system.
Thanks.

Ron - Looks like the other guys covered most of what to look for. I am just confirming that Case is a good choice for your needs. I have a 580CK that was made in 1968 or 1969. It has been used sporadically in circumstances such as yours for the last 13 years. There have been no problems other than one broken hydraulic hose, and two cylinder seals. These machines are known for reliability. A friend of mine does this sort ot thing for a living, and he put it this way:

A Case and a Ford can start digging a ditch at the same time in the morning. By noon, the Ford will be noticeably ahead. By 2:00, the Ford will be broken, and by quitting time, the Case will be further ahead.

You will be happy with it.

Drive the machine forward and reverse all gears.
stop and lift the machine off the ground using the hoe for the back and the bucket tilt for the front. After its off the ground get off and walk around the machine, This is a good time to check the front axles and kingpins for slop. Also when using the hoe look for for slop. Some is normal,,,

Ron,
I bought a 580D last March. These are pretty rugged machines. I would take either a mechanic familiar with this type of equipment or an operator. I took a friend with me who is an Operating Engineer. Besides the obvious of checking engine condition, charging and cooling systems, check the hydraulic fluid in the main resevoir and the shuttle. Make sure it is not contaminated with water. Check the condition of the shuttle carefully, the shuttle should engage immediately. Think of them as a 1 speed automatic transmission. There should not be any lag when shifting from forward to reverse. Check the pins and bushings in the hoe and loader bucket. Check hydraulic lines for leaks, chafing, cracks, etc. Check the front end components, king pins, tie rod ends, steering cylinders etc. If possible, work the machine to judge the hydraulic system. Get an owners manual, service manual and parts manual. They will cost you a couple hundred dollars, but they will pay for themselves the first time you have to repair something,(and you will). Good luck with your purchase.

Joel
