Machine will probably do the digging you have in mind, but any serious or constant digging would really require a ripper...which will make life a lot easier for the driveline/tracks.You'll find a loader with a 4:1 bucket is very useful on a farm, especially if you learn how to trim/grade.I think the 340s had diff steer(?).Check the condition of the running gear also.Good luck.

It's a great machine. Regarding the price, first I would see if it's a 340 or 340A, the newer model. I think 5K would be a reasonable price for a 340A in excellent condition, but still I think you might be able to do better. I think 4K would be a really good price. If its the older model or not in great condition, I would think more in the range of $3500.

chuck, I have the T340's bigger brother (TD9B Drott loader) with 4-1 (weighing about 21,500lbs with 75hp), so I've never used a T-340. But I can say that the 4-1 will work great for you, I love mine. Its great for picking up stumps and whole trees and moving them around. Plus for grading and dozing roadways and fill, and it allows you to dump in a higher dump truck etc than a conventional bucket. The 4-1 is awesome and if you only have the smaller trees, it should work great on them.

And as long as your crawler is tight, with a good motor, hydraulics, tranny and clutches it should easily dig 3-4' pits in the clay (and a lot deeper if necessary). I've dug down nearly 20 feet into hard packed clay with my machine with relative ease, so I'm sure a T-340 could handle 4' pits with ease. Basically I would think your machine could do everything a larger machine could do, it would just take a bit longer thats all.

In my opinion $5K would be an ok price if the machine is in good shape and everything works well. Good hydraulics, good tranny, good final drives, good clutches, good brakes, strong motor, no excessive leaks, bucket in good shape, and most of all a good undercarriage with at least 50% life left on all components. I would expect the machine to be fully functional in every way for that price. See the other recent T-340 post for details on what to look for. Plus here's a site for T-340's you migth find interesting:

Good luck
