I have a hd16 allis dozer. I"ve been clearing ground the last few days with no problems. after calling it quits today, i brought the dozer up to the barn. for some reason it does not want to come out of second gear. Does anyone know of any tricks or quick fixes that i can try to dislodge this thing out of gear? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe you will find the
end of the shifter in the trans is out of place since it appears to be in neutral. The last thing you want to do is force it into another gear while still in the gear its stuck in. I believe you will have to remove the trans cover and shift the trans into neutral. While the cover is off look for wear on the part of the shifter located inside the trans. It may nee to be built up with weld.

I'm not familiar with the HD-16's transmission, but does it have the locking mechanism interlinked with the clutch? My HD-5G has the interlock and I suppose it could get out of adjustment and prevent you from shifting out of a gear. On my HD-5, I can pull the shift lever out and confirm if the shifting links are properly aligned. The interlink has a series of spings and balls whick lock the shifting rods in place when the clutch is engaged.

First, you might want to disconnect it and maybe by jiggling it, you will be able to tell if something is bound up or not. By pulling it out slightly, the locking ball inside the transmission ought to free itself. On my HD-5, there is a jam nut and threaded clevis, which allows for adjustment of the shifting lock rod.

thanks, first thing monday i will try this. something definitly is not right because the position of the shifter looks to be in neutral but is actually in second or third gear.
