JD 440 lugging down

I've got a JD 440 gas dozer. Took it out across the pasture in 3rd, had to shut it down to fix a little track issue (did a left turn going down hill, started to lose the track off the rear left sprocket).

When I started back up it seems to really lug down when moving without a load. I can still steer. Can't drive in third anymore without stalling it. I did stall it going up hill, and was able to roll it back down to the flat. It was sitting for about a month - worked well last time or two I used it.

Any ideas? Anything I should try to give you a better picture of the problem?

Thanks in advance - Sam C.

The one I had required several carb repairs. Float, butterfly shaft (twice), that sort of thing. You sure your's is all intact?

It had been running fine, so I wasn't thinking engine related. I did empty the fuel bowl and found quite a bit of sediment.

It feels more like something binding in the drive train (although, like I indicated, I can roll it down a steep hill with it stalled).

It drives as if I'm pushing a full load when I have none. I'm off to play with it some more and may have better symptoms to report.

Lose the bearings in a final drive? I had a LOT of trouble with that. Got very fast at splitting the track.

Loose bearings always popped a hole in the drive oil pan. After replacing a couple I discovered that Bondo works great.

Good luck.

I have had this kind of problem with my JD 440 and it was caused by the track running off some of the rollers on the bottom and causing the track to bind while it still stayed on the back sprocket and front wheel. You can put your blade down and raise the tracks off the ground on the front, then get off and look underneath to see if the track is running inside the roller flanges. If that is not the problem there are some other things such as a broken governor, that can be checked. I have had that problem too. Make sure you have good fuel flow.

Best wishes,
Bob
