I am digging a large pond / small lake and have two dozers I can hire. One is a D8K with semi U blade @ $160.00/HR and a TD25 with semi U blade for $130.00/HR
Which is the better deal. I have about 26,000 yards to move and my longest push is 150’ (by design). What would be an average push for these units in yards? 5? 7? This should help me figure out cost. Thanks for your help.

Hi, ScottL. There are several different series of TD25 spanning around 25 years and you didn"t say which series. A TD 25C was a match for a 270 hp D8H --- while it was going --- which they didn"t seem to do for very long at a time. A TD 25B was not quite as good as a 235 hp D8H and they had no problem with regularity -- they broke down very regularly, especially with a little age to help those process.

International have not made much of anything bigger than the TD9"s that was any good for any serious work. Transmissions and back ends seem to be their most common failing. King Of Obsolete reckons the old IH TD18"s were/are a good snow train tractor but I"d reckon the constant steady load of a snow train would be a lot easier on a tractor back end than clearing or earthworks.

Personally, I think I"d pay the extra bucks for the D8, assuming it is in reasonable condition.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

The production of the machines will usually have more to do with the type of material they are working in and the skill of the operators. Both machines are older units and availability may be a bigger factor than anything else.

I would think that your decision will be based more on the quality of the companies you intend to hire than the possible working capacities of the machine they intend to use.

It sounds like they are pricing their service to you as time and materials. You might try getting them to bid the entire job and make your decision that way.
