I am attmpting to perform routine valve tappet clearance adjustment on the 4 cyl diesel in my Ford 655C backhoe. It seems to be a pretty straight forward maintenance item, but I encountered difficulty in a seemingly simple step. The service manual instructs you to rotate the crankshaft until certain intake / exhausts valves are open / shut and then adjust the clearances to spec. However, they don"t say how to rotate the crankshaft. There is no nut in the center of the crankshaft pulley because it"s coupled to the hydraulic pump through a U joint. It"d be very difficult to reach anyway, no room to stick a long screw driver in the U joint for leverage. What am I missing here...? thanks,
Jim

Jack it up so one rear is off the ground. Turn the wheel with a long bar while in gear? Just a thought.

Last time I did a 100 hr inspection on a Ford, I used a real good starter button to bump the engine to where I needed it. Cheap remote starter buttons will make the job more labor intensive than it needs to be

All great ideas, thanks fellas. I used the remote starter button method, worked fine.
