I need to repack the cylinder on my old case 300B backhoe, specifically the boom cylinder. I also need a clue as to how to accomplish this. I know the end of the cylinder where the rod goes in and out unscrews but how do you get it out and then what? Thanks for your help.

Baum hydraulics should be able to help with the kits. Do yourself a favor and invest in the right spanner wrenches to take the caps off (McMaster Carr). Some ape with a pipe wrench worked on my machine before I got it. What a mess. He topped that off by center punching the cylinder sleeves all around the cap threads. Guess he didn't want them coming loose. After a little file and die grinder work on the spanner slots, the spanner wrench and a cheater bar took them right off. Where possible loosen the caps while cylinder is still on the machine, this provides a way of holding the cylinders. I use a big lowboy trailer for an assembly bench. You'll probably need to press the new rings into the cylinder and hydraulic jacks clamped with angles to the trailer seem to work well. Use .010 tempered shim stock as a guide when pressing in the new seals. Good luck.

I got my seal kits from Able Industrial and Marine in Harahan La. 504-733-2601>Link

Now>Link the fun part. On my JD310a boom cylinder I had to dig a DEEP hole to put the boom in after I removed the bucket. This is to extend the cyclinder so you can remove the rod. To get the cap off I had to weld some small pieces of steel to the cap to make it wider so my 36" pipe wrench had something to bite on. Then while my partner pushed on the wrench I heated up the cylinder at the point where the nut threads are with a rosebud torch until it started to turn. CAUTION too much heat will start a hyd fire and you don"t want to go there! If it doesn"t get loose in a minute then cool everything off and try again. Make sure you loosen the locking set screw if you have one and make sure there is no pressure on the cyclinder ie rock the control back and forth. And one more thing make sure the rod is not quite all the way out so it is not pressing on the cap. You may need to use the hyd to push the rod out after you remove the cap. The nut that holds the piston on is very large and very tight. Mine needed a 2 3/16" socket with a 1" breaker bar and a 6" pipe on the breaker bar to loosen and tighen it. All in all not a bad job once you get the cap off...
