Using my OC46 this afternoon to clear some brush. Battery blew up, case split at top, all battery acid leaked out, contained in box beside the seat so no personal injury. Why? Any suggestions or explanations appreciated.
Thanks.

low water in the battery, and a spark from a cable clamp short will do it. i had it happen.
ususally when you are bumping along.

sounds like either the cableing shorted out to ground or alt/gen has shorted out. i would definitly fix that before running it again or the same thing will happen again...

It has happened to me twice in the last several
years, allways a spark from a loose connection
caused it. I allways keep a few boxes of baking soda in the shop. Mixup a batch with water to kill
the acid and go on digging.

I know of this problem occurring when the battery gets low for acid/water and hydrogen gas fills the empty space in the battery. A spark in the area of the battery ignites the gas inside the battery.

This is especially likely to happen when attempting to boost a vehicle and you arc the cable leads somewhere near the battery.

Causes of this condition are: evaporation of water from the battery cells over a long period of time due to not checking the acid level regularly and/or a generator/alternator which is overcharging the battery (this is not necessarily a problem in the generator/alternator, I have known it to be caused by a loose ground in the charging system).

I am not a battery or electrical expert. This is just my 2 sense worth based on what I've experienced. Perhaps others will have better or different info as well.

Good luck.
