A friend of mine and I went to get the 555B fprd backhoe that I bought today. He has a 2000 F-9000 tri-axle dump and a 20 ton Hudson trailer. We were about 1/2 way there, about 15 miles, when we lost the trailer. The safety chains did their job, and the trailer stayed with the truck. It has a 40 ton pintle hitch that goes thru a 2 bolt flange then the plate on the back of the frame then thru another 2 bolt flange, and has a big nut on the back. He had done a walk around before we left and all looked fine. Right where the pintle hitch goes thru the flange it broke off, this was with an empty trailer. We went to the parts center and got a new hitch and 1 new glad hand for the air line and were on the way in a little while. I don't care to think what could have happened. Anyway I got the 555 home and it's raining so can't even play. The moral to this story is take the hitch apart once and a while and check the hidden conditions that you can't see from outside, it would have taken 10 minutes or less to remove the big nut on the back and the hitch will come out and any breaks or cracks can be seen. Later, Nat

Nat,
I lost a trailer once on the service road next to an interstate highway from behind my tandem dump truck. It crossed BOTH east and westbound lanes before centering between the posts of a sign that had the emergency number for the highway patrol! Anyway, the reason it came off was the top of the pintle opened up, and it bounced off. I later disassembled the whole hitch only to find that the latch spring was broken, and if you beat on the top part enough, it would finally let the latch shake past the point of holding. By the way: talk about luck - this all happened at about 5:00 on a Friday afternoon in July, and other than the sign, the trailer hit nothing, and caused no accidents.

Part of my "walk around" before I haul something that's worth more than I make in a year is to give the pintle a healthy whack with a sledge.
