I have acquired a 1992 CAT E120B excavator ok machine for the year. After about 1 1/2 hours the track drive motors stop working will not pull itself. I had the hyd. pump rebuilt with new pressure relief values installed but still the drive motors do not work. Does any one have ideas as to what is the problem. The local CAT shop wants to rebuilt each motor at, with taxes $3,000 each, there's got to be another way, any ideas.

I have been talking to various CAT mechnics. And have learned that it may be a dried out seal(s) in the turntable, where the swivel is located. And the warmed up Hyd Oil is by passing the hose and going back to the Hyd tank. when cold the hyd fuild will flow through to the drive motors, when warm and not as thick is will by pass the bad seals enough to not power the drive motors. They think that with no metal in the hyd fluid from the motors it may be dried out seals leaking the warm hyd fluid. They said to take pressure check before and after the swivel joint to see if pressure lost is there.

Robert, check the pressure at the pumps with the engine at low setting speed dial 1 or low lever setting. First with the lines blocked between the swivel and the motors then between the valve and the swivel. If you get more pressure at stall when blocked before the swivel reseal the swivel. It's a lot cheaper and they leak more often that the old 200 series ones did.

I am having simular problem
Took the final drives to repair shop and was told 4400 in parts each. Ouch.
You can get a whole new assembly from cat for 5000.each.
I have been looking around for surpluss drives and found none so far.
As for automatic travel switch over I do not think models w/ serial # below 423?
have that function.

Taking out the 2 drives was easy did it in 4 hrs by my self with little expierence in this field.

Robert,
I believe there is a computer behind the operator's seat on the operator's left side cab wall. If you remove the box over the top of it I believe you will see a toggle switch. When the machine won't travel shift that toggle switch to see if it makes any difference. If it does you might need a computer. If it doesn't you might need and computer control solenoid.

These machines weren't much for diagnostics. You can check the travel motors yourself by finding the case drain hose on each motor. Lock off the track with a pin between the sprocket and the frame, remove the case drain hose and cap it, install a short hose on the motor side and run it into a bucket. When stalled it should only have a few drips into the bucket. If they are bad they will blow oil out.

If a swivel is bad the machine will usually drift off to one side when traveling straight. I would also suggest pulling the return filter and looking for metal particles. You should also pull the pump suction strainer in the tank looking for the same.

Good Luck!

I think I would go for the swivel(rotary joint) first. When they start leaking they work when cold then you can't get enough power to steer after 10 min of traveling.

Could be a number of problems. May be in the drive motor itself, the valving on the drive motor or it could also be in the rotary joint. We rebuild rotary joints all the time.
