I`m on my way to remove the cylinder head on my DD 4-71, but how do I do with the rocker arms? Do I have to loosen them from the pushrods or lift out the rockers with the pushrods complete?? Thanks, Dennis

In order to get the head off first remove the valve cover and the cover on top of the governor. Take the control shaft running from the governor to the rack loose and remove it then remove the control rack. Take out the two 1/4 inch bolts wher the governor bolts to the head (the tube the control rod goes through). Then remove the fuel lines going to your injectors. Next break loose all the locknuts where the rockers attach to the pushrods, then remove the bolts that hold down the rocker shafts. You should then be able to rock the assemblies up enough to get to all the head bolts. If for some reason you can't, then keeping all parts for each assembly together, remove the rocker shaft and simply unscrew each rocker arm off the pushrod. I always like to put the assembly back togeher and mark which cylinder it came from, etc so I know it's going back into the same place. What your left with then is the pushrods alone standing up and I know you can get to the head bolts then. I would also remove the 4 injectors just as insurance so when you get the head off it doesn't happen to get set down, bumped, etc and screw up one of the injector tips. Hope this helps. Wayne

Ok, thanks. I did get the head off now. Do you know how to adjust the rockers after re-assembly? /Dennis

Hey Dennis, it's a little more complicated than simply adjusting the valves when you get everything back together. I don't know what all your having done but to really be right when you get it back together you need to do a complete tune up on the top end. If it's a 4 valve head you need to adjust the valve bridge before you even think about the actual valve lash adjustment. You also have to set the rack back up, and in doing this it's not a bad idea to check the governor gap settings too. Also you need to set your injector height (can be one of several different heights depending on what injectors you've got). You can do most all the settings with just a few feeler guages and the right size wrenches, but to do the injector height your gonna either need the right timing pin or if your careful you can do it with a depth mic, or the depth part of a dial indicator. The main thing is that you get it right because that is what controls your injector timing. None of it's that hard to do, but it has to be done in the right order or your just spitting in the wind. I'd be happy to go through it with you when you get ready to go back with everything. I'm guessing the engine is in a piece of your own equipment, so if you want I've got an extra manual I'll sell. I've been listing some of my extra stuff on Ebay but haven't had alot of time lately to do anything so I've still got a good bit of my "extra" stuff left. If your interested I'll let this one go for $8 including shipping (unless you want it overnighted or something special like that). It's about 3/8" thick and has all the tune up specs, procedures, etc you'll need along with a minature parts breakdown in the back. I think it was printed in the early 80's but it's in really good shape. If you want a manual that's fine, if not I'll still be glad to walk you through it as best as I can either on here or via email when you get ready to go back together. Either way just let me know. I would be interested in the extra 4-71 manual if it is still available.
