Removing a link is looking for trouble, IMHO. If the track is so stretched and worn that it needs a link out, it should have pins and bushings either replaced, turned, or new chains. Your pitch is out there so far that the sprocket is starting to ride up on top of the bushing. Most people tighten their tracks up to keep them on. Next thing the sprocket is on top of the bushing and you're putting a lot of stress on the final drive bearings and housing. When stuff starts breaking back there, the pins and bushings or chains are going to look pretty cheap. Removing the link doesn't change your problem. The only thing it does is bring the idler back.

Back off the bolt and lock nut next to track adjuster grease fitting this will allow grease to come out the hole on underside of adjuster cylinder barrel. If track adjuster won't come back on it's own you can force the idler back with a 4x4 or 6x6 block of wood. If you have a loader tip the bucket down and place the block of wood between the bucket and the track. move the bucket so the block of wood presses against the track and front idler. sometimes it might take several tries of shimming with more wood. If a dozer use angle cylinders to push back idler.

Kristopher,
I have known of people removing a link, but it is usually just to get that "last little bit" from their undercarriage. It won't be long before they loosen up again. I always thought that, with the labor involved, it was rather futile. As far as retracting the adjusters, pull the grease fitting, and it should go back on its own. If it doesn't, that means it's at the very end of travel. You will have to align it so it will go. You may have to tap it (from the sides) with a hammer. If that doesn't get it, you will probably have to drop the tracks. Definitely check the seal cup on the adjuster before reassembly. If it shows even the slightest wear, it will leak, and you will be doing it all over again. Good luck!
