HI, I HAVE A D4D 78A. THE HEAD GASKET IS LEAKING ON THE BACK OF THE ENGINE. IT IS NOT GETTING INTO THE OIL AND I DO NOT THINK IT IS GETTING INTO THE PISTON CYLINDER. ANY THOUGHTS ON USING STOP LEAK OR DO I NEED TO TAKE THE HEAD OFF?? IF I NEED TO TAKE THE HEAD OFF, I AM OPEN FOR ANY ADVISE.

THANKS, BRENT MURRAY

The only thing that will correct the leak is a new head gasket Brent. If it's leaking to the outside it may not be long before it's leaking to the inside somewhere. Not too big of a job but you need something to lift the head off and on. It's heavy and needs to be set down gently so nothing gets dammaged. Check the exh valve stems, the only ones you can see for oil running down them and valve side to side movement to make sure you don't need the head reconditioned before putting it back on. The liner projection should be checked but if the fire rings on the old gasket are in good shape the projection should be okay. Make sure the block surface and the head surface and cleaned very good. If you find a nice ring of carbon all the way around the liners above the ring travel the engine is not blowing oil by the rings, if it's washed off in spots and looks like varnish on the liner walls it is blowing oil and the liners should be deglazed and new rings put in. To do this I would recomend pulling the liners out, to keep the dirt from deglazing out of the engine and to replace the lower liner seals that may start leaking in the near future.
Later Bob
