D2 pony problem

I need to move a D2 and I can"t get the pony to start. I know the desiel motor works just can"t get the pony started. Father passed away and I know he always had a difficult time with pony after the cat sat awhile. I have thought about attaching a high torque motor to rope pull flywheel with a belt and some way to release tension once desiel starts.
Does this sound foolish or is there a simpler way to get the thing started?

The one I saw at auction last month had a starter motor with a pulley, mounted on the left side of the pony, and a v belt going to the pony. Starter was mounted on a hinge, with a lever to tighten the belt as needed.

tim they can be a bear sometimes to start, but with a little persistance you should get it running.first off i know off people that just hook up a 4x4 and pull start em,and thats how the guy i got mine from started it for 10 yrs.but when i went to look at it it was on a trailer and i wanted to here it run so i set out to get it to start normally.so 2 things to check to start with are, does it have good spark and is the carb getting gas?they are notorious for the float sticking up,as they just use a gravity feed for the gas(no fuel pump).i'll give ya my start procedure.1open both petcocks on the pony heads and turn engine over by hand to flush whatever is in there ,also check oil in pony(especially for gas smell, and if so change),2 close right side and turn on the gas at the tank,3 go over to left side close that petcock pull comp release lever out turn on the gas below the comp release lever,4pull choke out all the way and throttle about half,5 wrap a rope around pulley and start pulling,i know on occasion i have to take the gas cap off and blow in the gas tank to force gas to the carb, once started push choke in and throttle out til she purrs like a kitty, then i usually let run til i can feel heat on the intake right above the comp lever, the pull up on the pinion lever til it snaps,6 then make sure the clutch lever is forward and its in neutral and push the curved handle on the side forward to get the diesel spinning,7 as its spinning look ove rat the oil pressure gauge and when it pops up give the diesel a little throttle and push the comp release lever and she should fire right up,where you located,if you were within 150 miles of me i'd come give ya a hand, they can be finicky but they can be beat.

You are right on on how to start a D2. One or two other points. Always shut the gas off on the pony to kill it. It will take a minute or two. The float and seat will last a lot longer and it will start eazer. If it is cold let it turn over with comprssison for a little while before you give it the fuel.

Catmandoo,
I live in the Portland Ore. area but the cat is in Sheridan Or. not far from McMinville.
Thanks for the advice. The pony cyls seem to be getting gas, maybe too much because when I open the petcocks it seems as a lot of gas drips out.But the right hand cyl (sitting in the drivers seat) seems to be getting alot more gas than the other one. Also I dont think I have the gas lever below comp. lever.
I wont be back up at the property for a couple of week but will try your suggestions when I am.
Thanks again for the advice. BTW what would the cat be worth, Im going to advertize it here at YT. I sold dads 8N here about a month ago but have not been able to find a value anywhere for the cat.

To find the serial # look on the side of the block or under the seat on the back of the tractor. You can also tell by the location of the air cleaner, J series 3J narrow 5J wide guage or track air cleaner up front. J series mid 30's to 46. U series 47 to 55, 4U narrow 5U wide, air cleaner in front of driver. Condition and hours drive price + attachments such as dozier etc.

Allen,
got your phone message, it was late so didnt return it. Now that you mentioned it I recalled that dad said it was a "J" series dont know year though. Ill check for serial# when Im back at the place in a couple weeks. If nothing else Ill try the elect moter on a pivot with a belt to get it started.
Winters coming, seems right around the corner, and I would like to have the cat running to be able to sell it.
Again thanks for the info and Ill get in touch via email when I get more info about cat.
Oh and thanks to all who have offered help with the pony problem
