Glad to have discovered this forum. I bought this spring a cat 977 20A2128, the old guy used his high hoe to start it. I rebuilt the carb on the pony, so it runs but the starter clutch is not working wont turn over the diesel, wont snap over to the engage possition either. I have been able to start randomly, by playing with it but, kind a frustrated with it,wife wants the road fixed, any ideas out their , should i just bight the bullet and get an elect. conversion kit?

I think maybe you could adjust the clutch and get it working, since you have got it to start some times. There should be a cover to take off and get to the adjustment. I have to get a pic to explain better.

i have removed the front part of the clutch looks like a fork, that shfts a disc that slides over dogs. Even when I have removed the cover from this part the enaging arm will not snap over leeds me to believe hat their is something wrong on the other end near the fly wheal i have not had that part apart yet. I did take apart all the discs on the other end the brass then steal then brass, terrible thing to take aprt. Should i put sn elc start in? or keep digging

Let me try to get you some pic of it on the weekend. The starting engine needs to be lifted up to get the pinion assem out. The drive gear from the engine is in the way of getting the end out. However if you have a starter hole with a cover held on by 3 bolts below the starting engine pinion the direct electric start is a option. I would give the clutch a good look over before giving up on it since the engine runs good.

Bob, i think i will try to save my gas motor, i think your right that i have to lift off the starting motor. Can I get at the engaging mechanism by taking off the the service cover to the right of the clutch, i am trying to avoid taking off the starting motor i think that will be big job. or do you think i have no choice

Email me so I can send you the pic. When you get it you can better judge how far you have to go into it. There is a set of latches inside to hold the pinion engaged, if they hold then maybe an adjustment of the clutch will do. Later Bob

that would be great, i did rework the clutch from the front end, and got all the discs out and cleaned them i did have an idea that to get at the balance i would have to take off the pup, you kind of have to be an octapus to work on this thing.
