I was wondering if someone could give me a run down of the different Cat Dozer names (D6, D4 D6-9U etc..) and what makes them different. I havent been able to find anything on the web that breaks down this naming scheme. Are these the size of the machines or the engine size or what?

My understanding is that Holt tractor began building Caterpillar tractors and the designation was to indicate engine and horsepower. The example I have seen quoted is that the D-8 indicated diesel engine and 80 horsepower.

Changes to a model were indicated by a suffix added to the designation, D-8H changed to D-8K after changes to the design.

However, if you really want a rundown on this- post your question on the ACMOC.com web site.

The 9U is a serial number prefix. Tells you what series (i.e. age) machine it is. Cat wasn't real consistent w/suffixes (D6D and D7G were produced at the same time), but are better now.

D=diesel engine. 2, 4, 6, 8= the size of the machine. The early machines started with 10. Then 15, 22, 28, 30 & so on. These were all gas engines. Hope this helps.

Jere, they called them by the ton before that 2,5,10 Ton. The whole industry has came back to that now pretty much with Excavator ##s they relate to tons the machine weighs.
