Cat 951C Brake Issue

I currently have a 951C serial 69H; the right steer pedal seems to not have much braking power. I have adjusted the brake band and there is no more adjustment left on it. What is involved in replacing the band, is there a way to undo it and replace it without having to do a complete tear down? (This machine has a cab on it.)Will running it like this affect the wear of the steering clutches?

The only way to repair it Brian, is to pull the steering clutches out. You will not likely do any MORE dammage by running it. The steering clutches are not effected by this, they release and engage normally and when you are pushing hard it should steer better than when running easy on a hard surface. What I meant by MORE damage is if the linings are worn out the brake drum surface might be gouged up by the rivit heads already but not necessarily. The last job it was on was likely loading trucks from a pile and the operator found it handy or necessary to make RH turns all of the time.

Thanks, Bob. I will just try to get in the habit of making left turns to prolong the life of the brake.

That would be a good idea Brian, the brake band is all one piece and the clutches are pressed onto the bevelgear shaft. Everything has to come out to change the band. The worst thing that can happen to it is the clutch release bearing to come apart, then you have to pull them and change it. When that happens the tractor just stops when you try to turn. The brake holds the drum from turning and the clutch stays engaged stopping the bevelgear shaft and the drive to both sides.

I am under the impression that the 951C has a lot of the basic drivetrain components of the D4D.

I know the D4D brake band is in two parts held together with bolts and the linings are riveted to the band.

If you have adjusted the brake then you probably accessed it from a plate underneath the fuel tank. There may actually be a larger plate that you can remove and access the brake band. If so, take the linkages loose and roll the band around the drum to see if there are bolts holding two pieces of band together (like there are on the D4D).

However, I could be totally wrong about how the 951C works and so to be sure, post this question on the ACMOC.com BB. Someone there can quote you chapter and verse on this process.
