Hey guys, I have a D7E 47A- it seems to be getting weak and blowing a lot of black smoke at fast throttle, seems to run fine up to half or two-thirds throttle. Could this be the turbo? It's not leaking oil but I don't hear a whine like on other turbocharged equipt. I have. Thanks samray

HAd a ford 7000 do that a little while ago. The turbo would just die out at higher RPMs. Found out the turbo was getting gummed up with carbon deposits just had to work it a wide open throttle to clean it out and it works fine. Just my two cents. JC

Make sure the AirCleaners are not clogged and then get a low pressure gauge to hook into the intake manifold and see how much pressure the turbo will put out. Should be close to one atmosphere(15PSI). If you give me the whole serial# I will get you the exact boost pressure on the weekend.

SamRay, where did you check it??? you need to get between the turbo and the engine, should be a 1/8" npt plug there some place to tap in. You must be tapping in between the turbo and the air cleaner to get a vac reading. Get you the Boost spec friday night.

Bob/Ont--there is a small plug on the intake manifold where it bolts to the head. It is on the pressure side of the turbo. Thanks samray

SamRay, is that where you got the vacume on your gauge? If so, when it's cold before you start it again take the stack off and try to reach the turbo wheel and give it a spin to make sure it spins freely. If the shaft had broken you would have oil pouring out the stack all over everything when you run it.

Thanks for coming back SamRay, nice to know you found the problem. If you think back a bit you likely heard a chirp out of that turbo everytime you reved the engine. It was nice it didn't dump it's cookies into the engine on you.

SamRay, I forgot to mention the engine needs to be loaded to get boost out of the turbo. I think you have a direct drive tractor so you will need to have some one ride along with you and watch the gauge as you put the blade into the ground and load it up.
