i am in the process of rebuilding a 40 4 roller jd crawler. i have a spare parts crawler im using for parts. the front support axle on mine has had some of the ends of it cut off. the spare crawler has a very nice front axle that hasnt been cut off. i have noticed its about 3-4 inches longer on each side. i imagine its supose to be but can someone tell me why its longer than the rear axle.

It is used to mount the tool carrier. The tool carrier can have a blade on it. The tool carrier can also be turned around to the rear and a pan breaker/sub soiler or cultivators attached to it. I think Deere started using the short one after serial number #100,000 on the 420's as the tool carriers were not being used/sold anymore. There could have been a aftermaket blade manufacturer that used it as a mounting point as well.

i thought maybe it was for that but didnt know how it would bolt up to it. the rear supports have bolt holes in the center where i suppose the dozer bracket bolts onto but just couldnt see how the front support was going to work. there is also a small hole in each side of the front support rail a few inches from the end. what are they for and should the holes be toward the front or toward the rear. thanks

that hole is for a bolt that goes though the bracket to tighten and keep it straight. ralph

Ralph Oregon: Post not related to the 40 JD Crawler but a question.
Where are you located? Don't see many posts from anybody in Oregon.
I am outside, Dallas, about 20 mi W of Salem.
Have two Oliver-Cletrac crawlers.
