inside or outside?

Hi everyone,
I've been kicking around the idea of buying a small dozer to do some chores around the property. Work will include landscaping, maintaining roads, clearing brush from overgrown fields, logging and making trails through the woods and maybe dig a small pond someday. Probably put 50 to 100 hours a year at the most. Thinking JD 440, 1010, 350, or Case 350 or something similar. I'm in no big hurry so I'm just sitting back hoping the right one pops up.
I see some in the swap guides with an outside blade and at first dismissed these. I figured it would be more cumbersome in the woods. Am I right with this or would the pros out weigh the cons? What are the pros and cons of an inside vrs. an outside blade for my intended use?
Thanks a bunch. Dan.

Hi, Slofr8. From the work you describe, I think you would probably be better off with an inside mounted 6-way blade. A general rule of thumb for this is: For bulk pushing work, go for an outside mounted 2- or 4-way blade. For fiddly bits, clean-up and odd job work, go for an inside mounted 6-way blade. (For the unbelievers, Case had 4-way, outside-mounted blades back in the 60"s. Most of the early ones were power angle/manual tilt.)

Happy hunting.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi Deas,

Where have you been hiding?

Case also had 6 way outside push frame on the

1150 , I have one here in the yard . My 1000

had only power angle but I built power tilt

and pitch control for it , also has ripper.

All the comforts of home. It's posted in one

of the extra sites for pictures ( case terratrac).

On 350 size machines inside blades are 6' 6 way outsides are 8' 2 way. I have a 6 way & can make 4' trails through the woods around larger trees good for 1 snowmobile. Easier to landscape on slopes as well.

Dan the inside push arms are a more modern design. In the old days the tractors where designed for mostly pulling and the integrity of tractor main frame and track frames was not that strong. Since the track frames are where the grousers meet the dirt it was a stronger point to push the blade from and to lift from aswell. Even the TD24 of 1947 had a bolt on hard nose to lift the blade from, older ones had an entire over structure for that too. The smaller dozers of later years where designed stronger and the blade frame could be mounted more handily to them.
