HI,

I'm thinking about buying a JCB 3C III. Does anyone have any good info about this Backhoe? Is it a good backhoe? What are the worst problems with this model? Any idea what year it would be? Are parts available? It starts good (with a little ether(sp?)). It runs great the only problem that I can find with it is the brakes. The brakes hardly grip at all. The owner said the brakes have never been good and he has not be able to get them working any better. Any ideas? Are the brakes bad on all 3C? Are there any fixes for the brakes?

Thanks,

Noah in Alabama

BTW, what does the III mean in 3C III?

To make sure if its a Power Train look in underneath and if you can see a propshaft from the back axle to the gearbox its a Power Train, the ones before were all one piece like any farm tractor, the Power Train was a very good machine and were much liked by drivers here in the UK,when they were popular here I never came across any brake complaints at that time, the machine has to be 25 years old at least because JCB started to make a the 3CX which was a purpose built frame for a backhoe rather than using a farm tractor as the base, they also changed over to Perkins engines and there were no more manual drives that would be about 1980-1. I can't say about the price but you should be able to get spares as my brother has an old tracked JCB from 1966 and he still gets bits for it

Bad news. I looked at the backhoe again today. I can't see the pro shaft. It looks like a tractor. So, Is there any way to tell how old or the model it is now? This backhoe has no clutch, a left and right brake pedel (right next to each other) and the brakes are above the axels on both sides, you access the brakes from the cab floor. Tell me the bad stuff about the older models. Is there anything that can be done to help the brakes on the older models?

If you see no prop you got the 3C MK3 TC which is about 1978,they were not what one would call a bad machine, the brakes were not the best but you could take it on the road, they can be adjusted,it has the same engine and hydraulics as the power train one,the torque and gearbox differ, they gave no trouble that I know of.

The III means a mark three.I'ding a JCB is always a problem because they had a new model out every year or so,the older JCBs which was built on a Nuffield tractor did not have the best of brakes but good enough to take on the road, there was 3 models of the MK3,first one manual drive, mechanical brakes,Second one MK3TC was the same but with a torque convertor, manual box and brakes. the last one was known as a Power Train and apart from the engine chassis and cab were completely different, you had engine, torque convertor, shuttle box, propshaft and then back axle with inboard hydraulic brakes, that machine came out about 1979,the brakes were good, which machine you are looking at I don't know.the engine should not be needing ether, they were very easy to start if they were ok.

AJ,

Thanks for your reply. This backhoe has 4 gears on floor and (what I call a shuttle) forward and reverse on the left side of the column. Does this mean that this is the "Power Train" model? Are parts availavle for the brakes? How much do you think this Backhoe would be worth? A ballpark or price range would be great!

Thanks,

Noah

Hi, to find out if your machine is a standard torque or a powertrain, here are a few tips.standard torque machines have a serial number ending in /3, the hand brake is on the floor, & the dash has the switch panel to the left of the steering wheel & dials to the right from drivers perspective.the powertrain has a serial number ending in /5,the handbrake is on the dash side, while the dash is made mainly of folded steel with a little pod behind the steering wheel which has the switches & speedo

I forgot to add that the brakes on pre powertrains are dry discs, so to help them you have 2 options.take the covers off & blow them out with an air line to clean them MAKING SURE YOU TAKE RESPONSIBLE DUST PRCAUTIONS AS ASBESTOS IS OFTEN USED IN THEIR MANUFACTURE,or replace the discs, about £100 a set of 4. Adjust them with the nuts in front of the linkage hangers, NOT by adjusting the rod length by scewing the clevis ends!
