I am in the process of rebuilding my rails on my 40 jd crawler. i have noticed there is holes for a fifth roller. they just needs to be threaded. i have some extra rollers so thats not a problem. Should i leave it as a 4 roller or add the 5th roller. just what are the pros and cons of having 4 or 5 roller rails. thanks for reading.

I forgot to add that running 4 rollers on a 5 roller trackframe will add additional stress to the front idler (assuming it is the front roller that is missing) and you will have a section of unsupported track that will tend to bow up and hit the rockguards on rough ground. Considering you already have a 5 roller trackframe, there is no possible benefit to not installing the correct number of rollers that the crawler was designed to have. If you see a picture of a 4 roller crawler, it has 4 roller trackframes. 40"s below serial number 62,264 had only 3 rollers, after that serial number you ordered whichever trackframe you wanted, 4 or 5 roller. The trackframes are different, they did not just remove or add one roller.

em: I have looked at six John Deere Crawlers on Tractor Photos. All of them had only 4 rollers. Like I said, it depends on what you are using your tractor for. If you have a frontend bucket on it, or a heavy blade, the tractor will be alot heavier on the bearings. So, you have an option to add another idler. Just like you have the option of putting on heavier tires on a farm tractor, or heavier axles or bearings. These John Deere tractors were just used for pulling drags, plows, or cultivators. None of them were real heavy on the idler bearings. Some original John Deere 40s still only had 4 rollers even with a frontend loader. It's really up to you and what you want to do!

5 roller will give you a better "ride". will also be easier to actually get ground level when doing finish work

em: If you mount anything heavy and run it for any period of time, the bearings are going to wear out alot faster on a 4-roller than a 5. If you are just going to use it for pulling and rotate your rollers, you would be fine with a 4- roller.

If you have holes for a 5th roller, then you have a 5 roller, someone has just removed that roller. It is not a question of which is better, it is what the crawler was designed to have, and in your case, it is 5 rollers.
