Well, I managed to get the track out of the way now enough so that I could get the sproket out of the way and get the axle out and see what's going on with my crawler. And now I know what happened. Seems the Pan that covers the main drive gear underneath the dozer had been broken at some point and someone had tried to JB weld it back together. Then either I or the person I had bought the dozer from rebroke that pan (cover) and all the oil went out of the housing and good ole yellow clay came back in! Thus, all the bearings are gone, not just wore, but disintergraded! Now the question I have is I had a guy in Canada send me a schematic drawing of what I thought I had, but the number on the main drive gear (Key #34) doesn't match what was on the schematic he sent me. The number on the gear is M2364T. Would anyone be able to tell me what kind of machine I have from this or year model. Looks like I'm gonna need the following parts. Would like anyone who might have any of them to send me a list and prices wanted at metterduder@yahoo.com. It would be appreciated. From the schematic it looks like I need :
Key 44...Retainer
Key 43...Gasket
Key 42...Oil seal
Key 41...Cup bearing outer
Key 40...Cone bearing outer
Key 29...washer (have mine, but looks kinda bad)
Key 28...cone bearing inner
Key 27...cup bearing inner
Key 26...shim(s)
Key 36...pan, oil
Key 35...gasket for pan
Key 30...plug, pipe, hex.ctsk. 1/2"
Key 33...ring, sealing
Key 32...cover
Did a good bit of damage, but the axle looks good as does the main drive gear, so if I can get these parts above, then I can get this thing back on the go! Please send list or contact for more information if needed and I'll see if I can find it. Thanks, David

David, what you have is a 420 bull gear.

So, does that mean I have a 420 crawler and not a 440 crawler, or will the gears interchange? Also, will the parts for the 440 crawler work in the other?

More casting numbers to help identify in reply to David-N-GA, 10-28-2004 07:28:41
I have some more numbers that might help identify the machine for certain. The final drive housing is T-10004T. The top cover on the transmission shifter cover is M-3958-T. The motor has the letters GWC and then a small tag that appears to be riveted in the block with the id of J299. Would this be the serial # of my machine? The sprocket has what appears to be the number T-18281T, but it's hard to see good. And the block has a casting # of 5125395. Thanks in advance for any help.

David, you really need to get a service and parts manual. (The JD parts site doesn't seem to go back to the 440 crawler.) I tried to rebuild the final on an old 430 and got lost quick until I got the SM.

I was just looking and wouldn't the service manuel that I can order from this site have what I need? The one that says 440 IC deisel and gas? Does it have diagrams of the individual components so I can see how it all goes back together? The diagram the guy in Canada sent me actually shows a great amount and I think if I had the parts, I could put it all back together with no problem.
One question I did have was wondering how or what way I should go about cleaning all the dirt out of that main drive housing? And also, when I put all this back together, what kind of grease do I need to put in the pan that covers the main drive gear? probably 90 weight? I guess if I had the manuel, I'd have all the answers huh? LOL!

One thing to consider is finding a complete 440/420 final drive assembly. If you can find a used one one then it will probably be cheaper than buying all the parts you have listed from JD.

I do know that the final drive off a 1010 crawler will fit on your machine. However, you will need to make sure that the number of teeth on the bull gear are the same as the old one.

The 1010 assembly is built more heavily (thats a good thing!) however, you will need to modify the sprocket from your 440/420 by cutting and rewelding the spoke area to make it run in line with the track.

I don't know where you are located but I got one several years ago from Barnett Trucks/Equipment in Clay City, KY. Phone # 606-663-2803.

Good luck,

Of course, a 1010 final drive with the 1010 sprocket

thanks for all the suggestions...That sounds like a good idea since I'm only wanting to get it fixed up good enough to sell, but don't want to sell it with the final drive in the bad shape it's in now. So, anyone out there got a used final drive assembly that they want to get rid of cheap? If ya do, contact me at Metterduder@yahoo.com and I'll get back with you. Thanks, David

Unless I have missed something, the parts you have listed are probably less than the value of an empty final case, let alone one with gears in it. Put in the new parts and then you can represent it as have new parts in it. Don"t buy the bottom cover new, they are not pricey used, and would be ridiculous new.

You have a 440 under about 456,000 serial number. The number stamped in the bull gear means nothing, it is a casting number for the center. That same center was used in 2 or 3 different bull gears.
All of the parts you listed with the possible exception of the bottom cover are current from Deere. Go to you local dealer, and they will probably have you everything in one to two days. Find you serial number, you will need it to get parts regardless where you get them.
Buy a parts manual, schematic numbers are for the most part worthless, the same drawing can represent different parts and serial number ranges.
