Hi,working on a 450 and was wondering about the pressure plate and brake drum and clutches. If I shake it real hard it has movement or wobble in it.Question is how much should it have if any.Is there a bearing or bearings that needs replacing or is it supposed to have some movement. Thanks,Rick

Are you talking about the center [ externally splined hub in the center of the assembled clutch pack ] ?? This hub will move if pryed back and forth on the shafts because of a little looseness of the shaft splines..Is it slipping or suspect some other problem??

Hi Roy, I think thats what I meant,it is the drum like thing that the brake band goes around,I can move it around a little.I had a little trouble with it before but it seems to be doing real good now. Before it didn't want to release, I could hear the brake trying to stop but the clutch would not let go.I popped the cover off and the jam nut on the adjusting rod was loose and not pressing on the pressure plate quick enough,I adjusted it and tightened the jam nut up real good and it is doing fine now.I was just wondering about the play in the drum? Doesnt seem to hurt anything,so I'll keep runing and watching and see what happens. Thanks,Rick

It has been a while since I worked on a JD 450 but I seem to recall that the steering brake drum (which is what you seem to be describing) actually mounts on the the final drive pinion shaft. These two are splined together and the drum slips onto the shaft and is retained/located on the shaft by metal snap rings which fit in grooves on the shaft.

I suspect that what you are noticing is simply the clearance between the splines inside the steering brake hub and the pinion shaft.

A certain amount of movement is normal for this type of arrangment.

Typically the worst case scenario is that the splines will wear until they no longer mesh and then you will have to remove the final drive assambly and replace the drum and shaft parts.

There will typically be no damage to any other components from a failure of these splines. But of course the final failure will occur when you have the machine in the worst possible position for repair.

One approach may be to take measurements of the movement you are seeing and the "run it and watch it" to see if the movement is increasing.

good luck
