My early model Jd 440 has once again wrung the splines out of the center of the final drive bull gear. (on the left side)
Have any of yall had this problem, and why does it do it , ?
When i reassembled it i made doubly sure that the shaft was tightly packed into the gear, tapped with hammer as i tightened the packing washer cap. Bearings are fairly new and good.

It has been a while since I worked on our 440 JD but I seem to recall that this may be a tapered shaft and bull gear set. To check this, turn the gear around and see if it fits more snugly on the shaft when facing one direction than the other.

Good luck.

Do you have the lock tab on the retainer bolts to keep the bolts from backing out? Are you reusing the old axle every time? If the splines on the bull gear and/or the axle have any wear on them at all, it will never hold. You may think you have them tight, but the power of the engine will rotate the axle in the bull gear ever so slightly the first time you let out the clutch, and then it snowballs from there.
There should be no reason for this to happen over and over. Something is wrong, just need to figure it out before it goes back together again.

Do you maybe have a tollerence spec on the shaft splines?

Mike,
No I am afraid I don"t. I have a new bull gear on hand, I can measure the spines on it to get some of an idea. If when you put the bull gear on the axle, you can get any rotation whatsoever, that is too loose. There should be not tolerance as far as play in the two pieces.
I stood an axle with real good splines up on the floor once, and set a new bull gear on it. I probably let the gear drop less than an inch when I set it on the axle, and was not able to pull it back off by hand. lavoy

Mike,
The new gear I have will be the wrong tooth count for your crawler, but I have the correct ones available.
Send me an e-mail through my website, or click on e-mail in this posting, and when I get the measurement, I will e-mail back.

Mine did that once. A much bigger problem for me was keeping bearings in the final drive. Found that if I wanted to run it very hard I was constantly repairing it. Traded up to a small Cat and the problems went away. 440 went to somebody digging soft dirt, who was happy. Good luck.
