Thought after I rebuilt the engine that it would move by itself. The dip-stick for the trans is 10" long and the one for the reverser is 6" long. Can someone verify that this is correct please. Then the big question...with the trans in neutral when the clutch is let out when the reverser is in forward, the engine really bogs down, but runs and when I let out the clutch when the reverser is in reverse, the engine dies right now. I'm suspecting the reverser is rusted up or worse. Short of pulling the engine again to get to the reverser to dismantle and check does anyone have a suggestion ? Any help would be greatly appreciated as my frustration level is rising.

That's a common malfunciton in that reverser - same is used in the 350. The input shaft and clutch assembly is probably seized onto the output shaft assembly. This situation prevents the counter-rotation necessary for reverse. 1010s and early 350 reversers have inadequate bearing support between the input and output shafts, and once that bearing burns up, the two shafts fuse togeher. Deere had updates to install a larger center support bearing (back in the 70s). This update includes a new inputshaft/clutch drum that holds a much larger bearing race. This failure can happen just from time and wear, or sometimes from installing an engine and putting too much pressure on the input shaft during installation. It is unlikely that the problem is in the valve body. I've rebuilt many reversers while a Deere mechanic back to the 60s, and never saw a single one that displayed your problem and was valve-body related. It might behoove you to pull the filter out and drain the oil and see if you've got debris and/or metal in the oil.

Are we talking 1010 wheel tractor? If so that is a double split to repair the forward reverser clutch packs. I would start at the reverser valve itself and see if there is something stuck or letting oil bypass and applying both clutch packs at once. The forward pack just couples the drive train together and the reverse pack works in conjunction with a reverse plaetary setup. it has been 18years ago but I beleive the reverse pack is in front of the forward pack. (I think)

Another basket case????? Oh well, here goes..Is main transmission in gear when engine bogs down?If the reverser bogs down in fwd but dies in reverse, tells me a leakage problem in fwd clutch pack or sealing rings on manifold on main shaft of reverser.. Could transmission be stuck in two gears at same time due to looseness in linkages??Maybe , maybe not.. Presures in forward should be the same as reverse.sounds like a tear down to me
