New oliver crawler ID help

I helped a pal bring home an oliver crawler today. We think it's an OC3. Could anyone help ID it so he can order a manual?
Hercules ixb3 engine 2446727 on left side of block (stamped).
number on left side of transaxle 207048 (cast in, or stamped) it may be called transmission?
wico magneto, marvel carburetor.
Ware loader.
Also, the track pins appear to be 15/16" O.D. Is it o.k. to make these from drill rod, then harden, or would softer steel (1020) be better?
Would case hardened 1020 be O.K.? It's not going to be a "trailer queen" or an everyday working tractor, just occasional stump pulling, light work in clay, etc.
Another question: Has anyone done the speed reduction by a jackshaft with, say # 60 chain and four sprockets, instead of the optional auxilliary transmission? (I promise not to modify any of the original parts.) It seems like there is room to do this by removing the original drive shaft, and positioning the jackshaft below it. (Machining costs are immaterial, by the way, since I'd be doing it) Would about 3:1 reduction be about right?
thanks

I have done the DeMarias auxilary conversion. It is well thought out and works very well. I believe that I will loose traction before there is enough torque to break anything.

In regard to the jackshaft setup that RAB mentions, I DID see a followup somewhere and it did NOT work - mainly because of flex/movement of the engine and transaxle. I've built several aux. setups with the same Ford 3 speed trans. that was used in the original aux. kit that Oliver offered. It makes a night-and-day difference. My version has a few improvements over the original. I also have a factory original setup, measured and photographed. I think my photos are still running at Cletrac.org As far as indenty goes, some later model HGs are identical to OC-3s, so it can be difficult unless the identity tag is intact. Late model machines have front idler wheels that cradle the track chain on the outside, whereas early models have a raised rib that rides inside the chain. Some late OC-3s have slightly different final drives than HGs. As far as track pins go, why not just buy new ones? I bought a set last year, and installed them after turning the bushings in my tracks 180 degrees.

Regarding the speed reduction, you need to look at radial loadings on components. The normal loading is axial and they are probably not tough enough in the other direction. There was a set-up like this on the Cletrac forum some time ago. Not heard anything since, so probably was not a success. Rememder also, you will still have a three speeder with a top gear speed of not much!
Regards, RAB

Thanks guys.
My freind with the crawler needs to scare up a starter (and possibly a carburetor) for the hercules engine. My brother has a hercules motor, but its smaller than the IXB3. We might borrow the starter to see if it fits though. I see a starter and a couple of carburetors on Ebay, but they aren"t well identified. It"s started to snow here, so the next several months may be "parts gathering time". Once it"s running, he can compare it to my brothers old two cylinder John deere, and see if he wants the additional speed reduction on the oliver (or cletrac?).

jdemaris your aux. trans on cletrac.org looks well done. Some of the images may be gone though.
A little "out loud thinking" on aux. transmission options, could a 4wd transfer case work? the input and output would need to be on the same axis (not offset like the output to the front axle). The transfer case would also have to be short enough to squeeze in there. I"m guessing if its possible, its been done. The model A transmission seems like a better solution (more speeds, compact, and closer to original aux. transmission set up), but maybe a (divorced, like early 70"s dodge) transfer case could be dropped in without much modification of parts.

thanks again fellas
