Bulldozer operations Book wanted?

I would like to find a book/magazine which basically lists the pros-cons of various bulldozers; manufacturer and models (blade, bucket, etc) operating controls, etc, etc. I am planning on buying a bulldozer but don't know much about them. I have looked thru Amazon Com's listing but they don't seem to have much. Any ideas?

Thanks

Joe

Really appreciate your comprehensive syopsis on bulldozers. It was a great help in selecting machines from the various adds. I finally wound up buying a John Deere 555A for $14,000. Seems to be in pretty good shape. I also bought the books on maintenance and operation as I am sure I will get the chance to fix a few things. However, it was too late in the year up here in Wisconsin to get much done. Just wait till spring.

Thanks again

Joe

Book called "Moving the Earth" has lots of good info and much more than you ask. It helped me determine what I really needed vs what I wanted.

I bought that book you suggested. Yep, it sure does have a lot of information. I also bought a JD 555A with backhoe to go along with the book! I haven't had a chance to digest all of the book but there was definitely some good info on dozing in there. After the spring thaw up here in Wisconsin, I will see what else in the book can apply to my ripping and gouging.

Thanks again!

Hey Joe, unfortunately I don't know of any one book/manual where you'll find comparisons of all the different mfgs, specs, etc like your looking for. I've been working on heavy equipment all my life and all I can tell you is to read the various equipment magazines every month and pick up bits and pieces here and there and put them all together. The hardest thing is most of the info you are gonna find is gonna be on new equipment and isn't gonna help you at all if your looking for something used. In that case when you see something you think you'd like post on here and ask for opinions. I can tell in the time I've been posting here I can tell there is alot of experience on these boards and nothing beats the actual operators experience on a machine. That will tell you more truthfully a machines capabilities and flaws more than any book or brochure ever could. If your anywhere around the NC area there is gonna be a Construction Equipment Expo at the Cabarrus Areans and Event Center in December where they'll have all the latest and greatest equipment on display. If they have anything in your area like this you could attend that and get a good comparison of most of the major mfgs all in one place. They have a huge expo every year in Vegas that I would love to attend one of these days. Beyond that here is the link I gave another guy a few days ago that gives links to all the major mfgs sites. If your looking to buy new, try brousing their sites maybe that will help you with your choice. Here's the link....Hope it helps

Hello Wayne,

Anything of interest to an existing equipment owner at the Expo you mentioned? I'm using an old 1968 Case 450 to clear a few acres. I'm mostly interested in parts and technical sources for things like new hoses, hyd. cylinder rebuilding etc. I'm also interested in learning better techniques for grading and land clearing.

It sort of sounds like this expo is for the new equipment buyer. What do you think?

Thanks, John

Hey Joe, this is the first time I've seen of one of these expos close enough to me to actually be able to go to without taking more time off than I can spare. Fortunately this one is only 15 miles or so from me. Anyway, I've never actually been to one of them, all I know is what I've read about them in the various equipment magazines. Based on that I figure as far as the actual equipment goes it's gonna be geared toward "the latest and greatest" stuff out there just like you'd expect. I imagine there will also be plenty of vendors geared toward everything else that is related to the industry be it repair products, parts, or whatever. The majority of equipment we work on is at least 15 years old and in the case of an old 212 CAT grader in the neighborhood of 50+ year old. I'm kinda old school in my thinking about equipment but I have to admit there are a few things they've come out with in the past years that have made things easier. Don't ask me what they are, cause I couldn't name one of them if I tried. For me it's just one of those things that when I run into it "I know it when I see it", or in the case of many "improvements" I cuss it when I see it. For me I just enjoy going and looking at new stuff and seeing all the new and different ideas and figuring how they are gonna effect my job in the future. I'm only 36 and like I said much of the equipment I work on is at least half as old as I am or older but most if it is already considered old by current industry standerds. Basically I still have alot of years left in this business and if I don't keep up with things, to at least a small degree, I'm afraid I'm gonna wake up one of these days and wonder what the he-- happened to the stuff I know how to work on. As of this morning Dad and I are planning to go unless something major crops up at the last minute. If you decide to come down let me know, maybe we can meet up out there. My email is----- Nota55Nomad@AOL.com----- - Take care, Wayne
