I have an old (!) 2010 crawler loader that has thrown a track. No doubt there is a simple way of fixing this and perhaps I will figure it out. However, if anyone has a method, I would be glad to hear of it.

Thanks for all the advice. I can report that I was able to get the track back on by lifting the front of the machine with the bucket and levering the track under the rollers and starting it back up the front wheel. Then I backed the machine up and rolled the track back into place. The tracks are quite tight on my machine, so the process must have compressed the spring shock absorber mechanism. I have made note of your suggestions for the future as I am sure the need will arise.

Further question: does anyone have any sketches regarding steering clutch adjustment, removal, repair. On this JD 2010, I sometimes have trouble turning to left, i.e., disengaging left track.

Thanks again

bars chains jacks and sledge hammer = standard tools necessary. I use a chain on track hooked up to front top corner of loader bucket to pull slack in track and get it in place over front idler. use dump cylinder on bucket to pull on chain after moving idler rearward as others have advised. If track is off sprocket its somewhat harder and difficult. Use common sense. Fred Flintstone used to do this kind of thing every day.

My 420 has holes in the sprocket. I've threaded a piece of chain thru the track links and a hole in the sprocket and pulled it on in first gear. Bolt the ends of the chain, you won't be able to unhook it.

Bernie,
I got the same suggestion from you before- works like a charm. Thanks. Although just the other day I slipped it back on and promptly ran the track off the front- back to the hard way.

Back off the track adjuster by letting the grease out of the piston, cylinder by backing off the set screw with jamb nut a couple of turns. If you have a loader place a 6x6 between the bucket edge and the front idler and power the bucket against the track . this will push back the adjuster. A dozer will work much the same way by using the power angle [ if so equipped].Get creative with a pry bar to force the track onto the idler or sprocket. I've found a chain come-a-long is a handy tool tohelp pull tracks into place.

I have a 350b that threw a track. Like was said, let the grease out of the adjuster cylinder. However, mine had a small ballbearing that the grease will push out. Put a rag in place and catch the ballbearing as it is pushed out. You will need it when you start putting stuff back together. I think this ball is for a pressure blowby or something like that.
Use a come-a-long, pry bars and slowly roll it on in first gear.
Good luck!

MrBill,

Seems I read this to late. I threw a track on my 350B Saturday. I let the gease out but did not know to check for the ball. So either it did not come out or it is gone.

Does anyone know what this ball is for and if it is really needed?

Or if two will be a problem assuming I replace it but the orginal never came out?

Paul
