Can anyone give me an approximate value on a 1975 Caterpillar 988 Wheel Loader with a six yard bucket? The machine is in fair condition, tires are maybe 50%. Thank you.

This one was a lot smaller, but I saw a Cat 950 Wheel Loader (Seemed to run good , but looked rough, almost all rusty) sell for a little over 10,000 at the Kissimmee Sale in SC today....

I don't know prices at all but it likely will not go for much more than a 966 of the same age. They are a great machine but most people needing that size of machine will want newer equipment. The size of it and cost of moving will cut down an the number of people interested in it. You will likely be bidding against the used parts people and scrap dealers.

Bob is correct on values. Another thing I might add is that condition is the biggest factor in determining value of any piece of equipment. Does it run, how bad are the leaks, what repair and maintenance has it had recently, how are the tires, how sloppy are the pins and bosses and on and on.

Old machines of large size are usually worth less than their weight in scrap. In order to scrap something out you have to pay to reduce it to managable size, remove the hazardous materials, dispose of the items that scrap yards will not take such as hoses and all this takes area and labor.

The machine could be worth less than $10,000 or up to $100,000.

Good Luck!

Bentwrench, there is one place that would take it but the shipping would be high. Africa, there are REAL Buyers, not Scammers, around looking for old machines but Dozer and Graders are highest on their list I think.

Thanks guys! I was looking for something to move some fair sized boulders (from about a ton to about five ton)for a sizeable landscaping project. Short transport across fairly level, solid terrain. I would only have to transport the machine about ten miles from where it is now, and figured on reselling it after the project was finished. I figured such a large piece of equipment with this much age on it would sell at salvage value, but didn't have any idea what that was.

Watch out what you buy. Don"t know your market but around here resale would be difficult.

I passed on a Case about that size, $2k. Too big for me, and pretty much everybody else. Ended up with a 944, 4in1, $6k. Much better for my needs. Guy who had it sure didn"t have anybody else looking. These things are not at all popular here. I don"t figure on resale.

If you are just doing one job hire someone, maybe the guy that owns the 988. It will be cheaper and less hasel than owning that big loader even for a short time. If you where thinking about a small dozer like a D3 and keeping it to do work for other people that would be different.
