I found a jd 550 for sale that has somthing wrong with the transmision. I'am not sure what because I just found the add and its to late to call. What were commen thing that went wrong with the tranny and the rest of the machine. It has a winch on it that has been rebuilt and an arch. For $7500 is it worth it? How much would a used tranny cost?

Like the other guy stated...run away...don't even think of looking back !! ..Goes for 550's --550A's and 550B's ..there were no C's or D's or E's but a 550G is a good machine...totally different transmission. Also with the old 550's, I've seen many people dump all kinds of money repairing the transmission themselves...and 1 month later is ruined again because they never drained the steering clucth oil (its all recirculated into the transmission) Its like the chicken and the egg scenario..not sure what came first...steering clutch wear metals and debris contaminatin g and ruining the transmission, or transmission oil damaging the steering clutches...

Don't walk.. But..Run away from that machine.. The last 550 transmission that I rebuilt cost the poor guy 8800.00 in parts alone.....That is a British Twin Disc transmission. No aftermarket parts are available. The usual problem is dirt and crap recirculating throughout the system and causing irrepairable damage to sealing surfaces on the clutch packs and shafts..I did change one over to a HLR transmission from a 450-C...
