Cat 977 engine clutch problems

I have an early model Cat 977 with engine clutch problems. When the unit is cold, the clutch seems to operate properly and transmits power to the tranny. As it gets warmer, the clutch slips to the point that the machine won't move in any gear. I pulled the inspection cover on the clutch housing and the clutch appears to be adjusted properly (3/8" freeplay at the pressure plate).

I do not have a service manual yet, however, in studying the parts book, it appears that this machine may use oil pressure instead of springs to apply pressure to the clutch disks. Is this true? If so, could a worn pump, low oil level or improper oil spec. cause this problem?

If it is worn out clutch disks, does the tranny have to be removed to change the clutch? Also, does the change require special tools and knowledge or can a reasonable competent mechanic perform the job?

Paul, you need to tighten the clutch up untill the lever takes about 30 Lb to pull it over center and engage it. There is some kind of a lock inside you need to loosen and turn the Spider on the clutch untill you feel the right snap over center then lock it up again. Is the machine a 20A serial number?
