Hye Michael, Dad and I specialize in working on the old friction cranes like your 22B. In answer to your question yes a dragline can be used for lifting. Two things that make a difference on how much you can pick are your undercarriage and counterweight. You can have either a 26" standard crawler or a 30" long crawler, then is the long crawler flat bottomed or tapered on the ends, then whether you have counterweight combination A or B. Knowing all that and boom length and angle you can look at the load chart and see what you can safely pick. For a 22B with the long /wide undercarriage, the heaviest combination (B) counterweight, a 35 foot boom at a 12 foot operating raduis (76 degree boom angle) the most you can hope to pick according to the chart is 23,700 lbs. From that you then have to deduct for the ground condition (minus 15% over the ends if using long tapered undercarriage on hard ground-vs-soft ground, etc etc etc. Too according to the manual there are some changes that should be done as far as your controls to do it in the factory approved manner, but other wise it's no big deal going from one application to the other be it as a crane,a clamshell, or a dragline. The main thing is that if it isn't an origional lifting machine and you don't have power load lowering where you can lock in the clutch operating your hoist line and control the line speed using the throttle, your stuck with controlling it manually with the drum brake going down and then trying to lift it with the clutch and then catch it going up. All this is OK if your an experienced operator, or if your not and you simply picking and setting something that doesn't have to be precisely placed. Otherwise if you don't have the experience and if there is the potential for somebody to get injured your better off to hire a boom truck for the day. The miost you can hope to pick is only a little over 10 tons and ten ton boom trucks are a dime a dozen. So the simple answer is yes you can do it, but there are safer ways if your not experienced. If you need a manual you can call SYCAMORE ENTERPRISES at 812-477-2266. They are now the OEM for BE, and alot of other mfgs when it comes to manuals. We've gotten a few manuals from them and they are all high quality like you would expect from any OEM source, and suprisingly reasonable on the prices too. You can call and see if they have the manual but you have to fax in the actual order to 812-476-7683.
