I changed my generator (which was not working anyway) over to a GM alternator. I made a bracket which bolts into the existing Generator baseplate, and uses the same belt. This was nice in that I did not have to remove the hyd. pump and change the belt.

I can make a drawing and email it to you if you like. Its a pretty simple bracket to make. I can also email you a picture.

I used a GM alternator but not the 1 wire type. 1 wire should work fine though and I'm pretty sure its the same footprint mechanically. I believe the model is called a 10-SI.

Drop me an email to "jvan@ipass DOT net" and I'll reply-email a picture of it.

I would have gone with a 1 wire system myself except I already had this alternator sitting around.

The GM Alternator I used was commonly found on GM cars from the 70's and 80's. It has an internal voltage regulator. There are basically 3 wires. The first wire runs from the Battery to a stud terminal on the back of the Alternator. This is the Alternator Output.

The second wire runs from the ignition switch to the larger of two terminals which plug into the side of the alternator.

The third wire is a smaller wire which runs from the ignition through a 12V light bulb and into the smaller terminal on the side of the alternator. This supplies field current for the alternator and the light bulb acts as an idiot light and will light up when the alternator output drops.

Having said all this, it's really easier to simply use a 1 wire GM alterator. I used the older style because I had one already and I did not mind running the extra wires since I was re-wiring the entire machine at the time. I completely re-wired the console and replaced some of the gauges. When I got it, the wiring on my 450 was pretty butchered up.

Drop me an email so I've got your email address and I'll email you a picture of the alternator setup on my 450 if you like.
