Rebuilding a starter -- questions

I know I have to rebuild or replace the starter in my 610 Bobcat, but I"m trying to pinpoint the problem with it so I can get an idea of how much work might be involved in rebuilding it myself. When I turn the key, it"s obviously turning, but it"s not turning over the engine and seems to be making a grinding sound. If I turn it on and off several times, I eventually reach a lucky point where it seems to fully engage and turn over the engine. Any ideas on what parts of it may need to be replaced? Will this be obvious once I take it out and look at it? Any advice welcomed.

The problem is the starter is not spinning fast enough to engage the drive. It requires a minimum speed before the centrifugel force of the drive spinning will cause it to engage fully. You most likely need new bushings and brushes. Fix it before it ruins the ring gear on the flywheel !!

Two follow-up questions:

How can I tell if the ring gear is still OK? I sure hope it is.
Why do you say I may need new brushes?
When it does catch, it really turns the engine over fine, so I would think that the motor brushes are OK.

Charlie, when the starter on my car did that I figured out what was going on. The clutch in the drive was slipping. Giving it a spin made it hot enough to expand and lock up good. Then on the next try it cranked the engine nice. Sounds like your problem. I had to put in bushings and brushes too as it as an exch unit and the armature was rubbing on the pole shoes, brushes where not installed straight and worn crooked. If you have an original starter you may only need a drive but pull it apart before you go for parts.

This might be as simple as a bad bendix( starter drive) or it could be a bad starter ring on the flywhell.

I think you are right about the starter drive Kent. I had that happen on my Olds. Charlie, tear your starter apart before getting a drive, you may need bushings brushes and a fork too. Could save you a trip.
