excavator track tension

Have a Cat 307B that came without a manual. What do you use as a rule of thumb for track tension? Some say half inch of slack on the top and I've heard 7 inches of slack with tracks raised. But measured from where to what. The Cat has a push blade and is usually is working in loam to muddy conditions. Also have a Hitachi EX60 with rubber tracks but still drives on chain in the rubber. Any thoughts on its tension would be appreciated. I must be running both to loose as I've had to put them back on each in the last 2 days. How many hours of running before they will need it again. Thanks. Kevin

Kevin, the 1/2" means to make them as tight as you can and back the idler off a half inch. That method came along with sealed and lubricated tracks. You can use that method or raise one side at a time and pump them up untill there is about a 3" to 4" sag in the center.
