Gentlemen, I purchased a Cat 941B to do some land clearing, put in some roads and clean up a 32 piece of land that I purchased. It was a great idea, but it is not working out that well so far. The machine is turning into the money pit and I would very much like to get some advice from a non bias mechanic. I am not stupid when it comes to machines, but heavy equipment is very new to me. Is there anyone on this site who could aswer some questions? Thanks
Randy

Hi neighbor,

You're between Buddy and me (C'vlle). We have smaller, and older, 933s. Buddy's the real mechanic.

I had the misfortune of hiring a company in Fishersville, not Carter (with the Cat monopoly in Va), who totally screwed up my transmission. I had to fix their mess. With Cat repair manuals it really is possible to do your own work if you're inclined. Might have a small tool investment if you're not well equipped, but not significant compared with the shop price.

Forgot to ask where you got it.

My misfortune was with L.E.Woods, Fishersville. I only got 18 hrs after they rebuilt the transmission before it froze up. They promised to come out week after week after week and finally quit returning my phone calls, leaving me on my own.

Working great now. They forgot to tighten the last 3 bolts inside the transmission, two fell out. Took out 3 teeth on my custom milled reverser gear. Thousand dollar gear, not to mention the time to tear the whole thing down.

Hey Tom, I got the machine from a used equipment place up in Pa. I am over sea"s right now working, and for the life of me cant remember the name of the place. I"ll send it along when I get home. I am pretty sure they were aware of the prblem. I knew very little about heavy equipment, so I had no reference as to what to look for. Anyway this machine had a lot of work done to it and looked a lot better than most I had seen. I paid a few $$ more hopeing to avoid exactly what I am going through now.

I have had several smaller problems since getting the machine. All dealt with now, but a few weeks ago a major setback. Final drive problems. I paid $18k for the machine from a dealer. He said it was in great working order. I put less than 100 hours on it. Carter Cat (local mech"s) want $13k for parts and labor to fix. I am informed that parts a rare (1974) and shipping is costing $$$. Carter recommends replacing both sides, only one is busted. Does it make sence to replace the other side to the tune of $5k? Is there a better way? Does a novice with heavy Equip and a pretty standard set of mechanics tools stand a chance? Is there a source of parts out there for these machines? Gentlemen, any and all advice would be welcome. Thanks

Randy, likely what he is wanting to do is to tare down the other side and replace the hub bearings before they go to pieces and ruin the other gears too. When you are running your loader every week put a crowbar behind the sprocket to check for side movement and check the oil level too. If you knew about this it may have saved some of your final drive parts. If the gears are worn they ware more on one side , the drive side so they can be swapped side to side and run on the other side of the teeth for max life.

Buddy, if you could help out that would be great. I am currently over sea's and have no number to give. I am due home on or about the 18th of Dec. The problem is that the machine is sitting at Carter as we speak. I have invested in the haul charge as well as the tear down $1,200. When I got the $$$ amount it knocked me out $13k for parts and labor. I have to make some decisions. Any advice? This really put me in a tight spot. If they just get it up and running agin for me, maybe I could get up with you to have a look? Please let me know. I'll send this to you via e-mail also
Randy

I have asked for help on here before and it worked well, and if you see this Buddy, I wanted to post before I called you again. I paid Carter Cat $9000 to fix the final drive on this machine and am so very tired of spending money on it. It has now developed a problem in the front wheel. It looks as though there is a bearing or bushing in there that has gave out. My question is can the wheel be taken off, and the bushings replaced by me and a friend, or do I need to enlist the pro"s again? If I have to go to Carter it will sit for years before I come off that kinda $$$ again. Any advise would be greatly appreciated..... Randy
