I have a 1980 JD450C Crawler that will not go forward or backward after about an hour or so of usage. Is this typically a clutch problem or could it be a transmission problem?

You need to do a pressure test. 450s with the HL-R transmissions are prone to one particular adjustment coming loose and causing a pressure drop. When you depress the clutch pedal, half way down is supposed to disconnect the hydraulics in the HL-R hydraulic transmission, and pushing the pedal all the way down is supposed to disconnect the mechanical engine clutch (so you can shift the four speed gear range transmission). There is a linkage shaft up front, adjusted by a 5/16" or 3/8" nut on a threaded shaft hidden under a rubber plug (down by your feet). It determines the relationship of the two aforementioned disengagements to each other. If it gets loose, the hydraulic pressure gets low in the HL-R. We had to either add Loctite, or double-nut the adjusters to keep them in place.

One more thing. If the HL-R transmission pressure is low, it will allow both your steering clutches to slip in the "C" series and newer. The 450B and older have dry steering clutches.

You should have the RLR transmission, There are two filters that could be near pluged or you are low on trans fluid. The dip stick for the trans is under the seat, check that first, the first oil filter is in front of the rad by the oil cooler, it is a spin on and is the same as the engine oil filter. That can be changed in a few minutes with the engine off! The other filter is in the side of the trans case, that requires the trans to be drained to be changed. You should get your self a manual it will save you a lots of bucks as you can do a few things without going to the dealer. There are some pressure check points but I will have to check the manual to see were they are. There are hoses with have clamps that run along the inside of the frame from the trans to the oil cooler up front, They tend to leak and can be the cause for low oil level so if the oil is low check that out.

The place to check trans pres. is on the trans top cover , between the steering levers. You will see what appears to be a drum bung. Remove this bung and there will be an 1/8 pipe plug in the opening at about a 45 degree angle.. Grease your allen wrench before removing the plug...Screw in a gauge with a grease gun hose on it . Gauge should be at least 250 lbs.It should run at about 175-180 lbs pres. There are several places to adjust the trans. get the book and follow steps.
