Do any of the small track machines use bearings instead of bushings on idlers and rollers. I do not seem to get much life out of the Oliver bushings on my loader or dozer.

Fellows, I hate to be the odd man, but Case used tapered roller bearings in the 800,1000,and 1150,and probably many more. they had seal troubles on the early ones same as every one else, later sealed rollers usually wore out the shell long before the insides failed.

In 1958 I worked at Caterpillar as a Jr engineer in the research dept. and at that time they were experimenting with large Timpken tapered roller bearings along with a wild new type of oil seal that looked like two 6" dia stellite rings backed by rubber O-rings. I was "in charge" of overseeing the ones that had been used in the field and were returned for examination of failures and such. As far as I remember they held up a lot better than the bushed type because of the superior seals. I don't have a clue as to whether they ever incorporated the design into production. The bushed type should hold up well as long as the seal keeps the oil inside, after that they are history.

The Reason Anti-friction bearings (Tapered Roller Bearings) where not used in the idler and lower rollers was because of the cost of production. If you were a manufacturer and had a choice of cheaper bushings to more expensive tapered roller bearings, and they both held up the same amount of time, the choice would be safe the money.

Oliver rollers should be filled with a sae 50 oil not grease as it will not flow throu the roller properly. If your seals are shot you can try a 00 weight grease and lub them often. As for roller bearing in the lower track wheels as Oliver called them, yes on their larger machines they offered high life rollers and front idlers that had tapered roller bearings. At least thats what their manuals say but I have never seen any on an actual machine!!

No one to my knowledge makes a roller bearing bottom roller. I don't think they will hold up to shock loads like a bushing..Even trachoes are bushed...

My Allis Chalmers HD6 has Timken roller bearings in the bottom rollers. So do the replacement rollers for my HD4 if I buy them from AGCO. HD4s originally had bushings, but the newest HD4s that became the 650 series have the Timken roller bearing bottom rollers. From what I've seen, the rollers hold up very well. But, most of the oil-fillers rollers I've seen or use hold up well also.

AC did on the old HD21's but they changed back to bushings for the reason you said.
