It appears that the way you are removing the final drive requires pulling the steering clutch drum out of the brake band.

Another option is to remove the three bolts on the final drive housing that hold the bearing retainer cover in place on the final drive pinion then removing the outer pinion bearing and pinion gear. This should let the final drive slide out.

This cover is the one directly above the final drive axle. Be sure to keep any shims that come out so you can reinstall them when you replace the final drive.

You may have to use a brass hammer or drift to persuade the pinion shaft to loosen and slide back thru the gear and inner bearing race.

However, I have found this is still easier than finagling the drum out of the brake band while you remove the final drive assembly.

If it is a 420 there are 2 bolts that go in from the backside

Which crawler loader? The finals on my straight 350 slid right out. By the way, you can remove them without taking off the tanks and using a hoist like the book says this way: after you split the tracks and jack up the rear end, remove the bolts and replace them with four pieces of 18" or so 3/4" threaded rod. Put a (cheap) auto floor jack under the final bottom caps, and wheel the drive out. It helps if you have a solid floor, but I did mine in the woods with a 2 X 10 for the jack to roll on.

Oh lord.. You need to turn the brake drum til you find the set screw { thru the plug hole directly above the final in steering housing ]once the set screw is out you need to support the brake drum with a bolt and appropriate washers, to hold drum in place. Don't tighten so bolt acts as a set screw that you just took out...Take out upper final bearing quill. watch the shims , they need to go back in. Using a slide hammer with appropriate bolt size, remove the upper , outer final drive shaft, then pull the final housing..
