I too wanted a one wine and only one wire alternator. I know they exist. Some foreign cars use them and I have seen leese nevel brand alternators in a rebuild shop that only require one hot wire run to the plus batt terminal but could not find one when I needed one. My mack had a one wire LARGE delco remy with only one wire required but It is too big to put on a average farm tractor. I ended up using a alt from a gm car like the ones most of these sites say to use.

GO TO NAPA!
it looks much like a GM Delco Sa 1 alternator. JUST tell the guys at napa you want a one wire alternator, they have them ( i bought 2) one for the oliver 550 and one for the Jd 440 dozer. They work well and hold up good,$65 with a core return.
When you wire it in though be sure to wire it through a toggle switch or your key switch, before you go to posative terminal, as it will drain the battery if you dont cut it off when not running engine.

Any local starter shop should have one ready to go on shelf, and JC Whitney sells kits to make your alternator into a one wire set up. But check locals 1st you save on shipping.

WELL, if it isn't clear enough from the MAD Site, I'll take the liberty of posting a link to BobM's wiring diagrams from the Farmall Board.

got mine through JC Whitney, I think it was $65. plus shipping. Be aware that if you rarely use your equipment like I do, it takes several minutes of rather high RPM to get them excited again, I usually just ground mine for a split second at start up to excite it. I'm probably shortening its life, but at least its charging while warming up at low RPM!

is that 1 wire? same frame as a delco.im making brackets ill hold off if its a different mount.i put a 3 wire on my ford 601 its a pain.have to put a switch in to shut off cause the alt still supplys voltage to points.

Get you a diode P/N IN4003 from radio shack and wire in the line that goes to the F terminal on the alternator and you will not need the switch. I put a one wire delco on my 450B and as soon as I can get to it I am taking it to the alternator shop and having it converted to a three wire and rewiring the dozer with new wire. I have to crack the engine wide open to get the one wire to start charging. I have three tractors converted to 12 volt with a Hitachi alternator P/N 14321. Easy and compact to use. The pulley is split and you can add spacers between the two halves to match the belt. Any good alternator shop can convert the delco to one wire if you want. The one I bought cost $35.00.

I see them for all in many places including Ebay. The older Delco alternators are usually used (ca. 1980s), and the internal regulator is replaced with a "self exciting" regulator. That is what makes it a one wire hook up instead of a two wire (or three wire for extra precision in voltage sensing).

The Delco 10si or 12si was used in 1971 - 1986 General Motors vehicles. I usually pick them up for $15 apiece. They are meant to be used with a two wire - or three wire hookup. Either way works fine on a tractor. It's a ten minute job to install a "self exciting regulator" and make it a one wire hookup. Seems any good alternator shop should have it. If not, the regulators, or complete alternators are for sale all over the place - inluding this website. I've started using Hitachi alternators out of Subarus because they are smaller. One, of many places on the net to get the parts is: Link They charge $25 for the regulator, or $90 - $120 for the complete alternator. They also sell universal mounting brackets at: Link Personally, I prefer the $15 used alternator and two-wire hookup. Works fine and simple to do.

For a two alternator attach a jumper from the bat. terminal and the 2-S terminal. The 1-F terminal is the terminal with the warning light. and should be wired to the iginition side of the switch.
