Thanks to all who explained tech details about a reverser. I am still in the dark how to use it, in conjunction with the regular 4 spd transmission on my OC46.

Veterans on this site remind me there is no such thing as a dumb question, so help me turn the light on and take advantage of the reverser on my loader. Thanks again.

Some general guidelines that I have used with Case and John Deere reverser systems-

Use first (lowest) gear for digging compacted or undisturbed earth.

Use second gear for digging from stock piled or other loose material.

Use third gear for finish grading or dozing loose material.

Use fourth gear only when moving machine without loading or dozing such as between work sites on smooth relatively level surfaces.

Once you've finished loading the bucket or making the dozing pass, use the reverser to change directions while generally staying in the same speed gear.

However, you may find it more productive to shift to a higher gear when backing the machine or carrying material a significant distance once you have loaded the bucket. But shift back into the appropriate gear when putting the machine back under load such as digging or dozing.

When in doubt on which gear to use just remember on old or any machine, slower is usually better for the life of the machine and comfort of the operator!

Good luck,

Choose a comfortable speed and leave it alone. Then use the reverser for forward and reverse.
