I currently have a 350C JD dozer and will upgrade in the next year or two. I want a JD 450 D or later. I have heard of the nightmares with the earlier 550 transmissions. Is the same true for the 450's? If I am looking at 450 D or E, what should I look for in transmission and features, since I dont know what they have,,,,,like power shift, pedal steer, joy sticks, etc.
I do landscaping and light excavating in rocky ground in NE Penna. I am not real fussy on features but power shift would be nice or a reverser that has a faster reverse ability. Thanks for any help on this.

Yes , You heard right about 550 transmissions. They are an excellent transmission when new. VERY expensive to repair...450 transmissions are more reliable but they do need a rebuild once in their lifetime. [ if done right ].I'm a sucker for the 450-C. They have a lower hood and you sit a little lower on the machine. 450 transmissions do need an occasional adjusting for speed of shift and pressure adjustment for longevity . Most people run them out of adjustment, they will shift harshly and temperatures rise taking their toll on internal components.Speed of shift can be adjusted to operators preference.
