I've always heard that the 188 engine is pretty stout. Makes me wonder what the failure mechanism is. Lack of oil pressure to the rod bearings? Perhaps coolant leaking into the cylinder when it sits causing the rod to break when the engine is started?

The 188 in my 450 just started smoking excessivly from the valve cover vent. Fortunately no broken rods. I'll be doing an in-frame rebuild hopefully sometime next week. I suspect a head gasket failure, but it could be a ring.

My gut feeling is that with everything in relativly good shape, and with proper maintainence the 188 should be satisfactory considering all the applications it was used in.

Anything about the 207 that makes it a better engine other than it having a bigger bore?

well -- on my 188 it had something to do with the 7500 hours on it. at least thats my take on it.

7500 hours on an engine used commercially is enough to kill it. I recon the trick is to know when you should do a rebuild before it throws a rod.

7500 hours... I should be so lucky.

I've got a good 207D and it is exactly the same physical size as the 188D. It's a bolt-in replacement. I've come across Case 188Ds in all kinds of equipment and have noticed, that many, if not most of the 188s I've looked at have patched blocks where a rod has gone through one time or another. Seems #3 rod is the one that tends to let go, and usually puts a hole in a non-strategic part of the block - i.e. a spot where there is no water or oil galley. Thusly, there are many that have been crudely patched (some with epoxy) and rebuilt. The beat up 580CK hoe I've got torn apart in my shop has rod #3 hanging out the side of the block (we've discussed the machine previously, wish some would buy it).

Model #33, machine ser. # 8336306. The 207D is ser.# 4307581. $2000, as is, where is. Been in my shop for four years with front end off, and old 188 engine held in by two bolts.

Kevin, I've seen many #33 hoe attachments sell for what he's asking for everything. Its probably a 580CK and weighs twice the weight of your 310. Its got to be worth $7000 running.
My two cents, Best wishes, Dennis.....

I'm not going to part it out simply because I don't want to get stuck with, or deal, with left over parts. I was offered a $1000 for the 207D engine, and I've had offers on the hoe, but once I sell off ANY parts, I'm stuck with a junker. At present, I have enough parts to fix the hoe and get it running - I just lack the time and enthusiasm. Every winter I've been planning to put it together, and every winter something else comes up. At present, I've got an Allis HD4 dozer torn to pieces and I plan on spending the winter rebuilding it. If I get THAT done, I've got a 4000 Ford Industrial backhoe that needs work, also a 1920 Ford Model T all apart, a 64 Chevelle with the motor sitting on the floor, etc. etc. So, the only way it's going for parts if someone esle buys it and parts it out - or - maybe I'll bring the whole works to auction. At least at auction, I'll be done with it, one way or the other.
