I was wondering if there is a site pertaining to the undercarrige of crawler type tractors? I am looking at used cats, very old cats, and need more information on determining wear. I know very little about them, and I am facinated especially with the 9u D-6 and 7u D-4. I like old equipment, enjoy working on older machinery. I have a few acres to clear, so I thought it would be fun to get an old cat and play with it so to speak.

Contact your Caterpillar dealer, there is a Caterpillar track / undercarriage guide book available which will tell you everything you need to know about measuring undercarriage and the specs etc. It covers machines from the D4 7u era up to modern machines. Many parts used on the D4 7u / D6 8U series are interchangeable with newer models. I've been around Cat crawlers for a fair while now and currently involved with a fleet of 25 Cats from D9Ns through to new D11Rs.

Just a couple of hints to watch: Watch the sprocket teeth: Should not be sharp--if so indicates the pins and bushings worn--out side and inside. The wear line should be from 1/4-1/2 inch below tip of tooth. Look at the chain pin bosses--Should not be scrubed by the bottom roller flanges. If so indicates worn bottom rollers. Costly. Look at the clearance between the track pads. Should be close when the chain is tight. If pins and bushings are worn there will be a lot of clearance. Look at the track droop from the top idler to front idler--should not drop severly--indicates need adjustment of front idler necessary or frnt idler might be adjusted all way out--which would again say that the pins and bushings are severly worn. Feel the bushings that connect the links of the track together--they should not be worn very much and definately should not be worn thru. There is a lot more to tracks--so ask if you would like or a good book on undercarriage will help. I just tried to give a walk up look to help. Dm
